One of the great things about social media is its ability to connect like-minded people. This is particularly helpful for people who are seeking out specific support...as is the case with gardening. There are a ton of blogs, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, Ning groups, and the like, with garden chatter. Using these different platforms is one of my favorite ways to have conversations with other people who have the same passion and interest in dirt as I do. (For more information on using social media marketing on Facebook, check out the series I wrote previously.)
Facebook has been making quite a lot of changes recently, which always leads to temporary chaos. This time, they have changed the feeds that filter in on your profile. It is important to note that there are two feeds, the news feed and the Live Feed.
The News Feed is a filtered feed of 250 of your top friends...as determined by Facebook. The content is limited to conversational posts. If you decide that you don't want Facebook to choose whose content is in that feed, you can scroll down to the bottom and click on the Feed Options button and add to the mix. The live feed is a mashup of all kinds of updates from all people. Here's where you go for "Julie is now friends with Brad" levels of information.
It is nice to have the option to see more or less content...though with the Hide button on each entry, we have had the ability to selectively screen out updates for a while now. It feels a bit artificial and weird that Facebook would be the one making that determination...not sure that's such a winning idea.
Last week, I recorded a short video for Garden World Report on finding gardening folks on Facebook. Check it out below...
